Description
Job Summary
Provides age and population specific direct clinical care to neonate, infant, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. Delivers patient care according to the Scope of Service for Surgical Services. Adheres to and practices the St. John's Health Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities.

Essential Functions
1. Patient Care
· Obtains and reviews all patient data using; observational, interviewing, interpretation and critical thinking skills in an age specific and developmentally appropriate manner.
· Identifies risk factors and provides for patient safety. Implements measures to prevent injury from environmental hazards.
· Practices autonomously and consistently with professional nursing standards.
· Identifies changes in patient status, exercises critical thinking and independent judgment within the context of a multi- disciplinary approach to patient care.
· Develops a plan of care that is unique to each patient's needs, evaluates patient response to plan of care and reflects measurable goals that are mutually set with the patients.
· Evaluates patient response to pain management interventions. Offers alternative pain management therapies.
· Demonstrates knowledge and awareness of medication action, side effects and protocols for use. Using 2 patient identifiers, gives medication safely and accurately according to policy and procedure.
· Organizes and prioritizes care of multiple patients with varying levels of acuity in a timely and efficient manner with a positive attitude.
· Manages specimen collection, handling and disposition according to hospital policy. Labels blood specimens at patient bedside.
· Uses supplies and equipment within safe parameters. Ensures equipment is functioning properly before use. Reports equipment malfunction following the appropriate reporting procedures.
· Initiates and completes computerized Event Reports for unusual events consistently. Reports near misses. 

2. Patient and Family Education
· Addresses patient and family's spiritual and emotional needs utilizing a holistic approach.
· Assess patient and family education needs based on; age/population, developmental level, readiness to learn based on patient perception, educational level and expectation of care. patient understanding, available coping mechanisms and outcome expectations.
· Initiates and incorporates patient/family education into the plan of care and nursing practice.
· Identifies continuity of care needs for discharge and follow-up using appropriate resources.
· Communicates up-dated status report and clear information to patient and family to make informed decisions. 

Unit Specific Duties
· Coordinates surgical care of patients with anesthesia, surgeon and Peri-operative team. Confers with pre-op RN, addresses special care needs of patient, coordinates surgical needs of patient with scrub. Verifies comprehension of informed consent and acts as a patient advocate when there are concerns.
· Acts as the patient liaison during the time out process. Verifies all components of Universal Protocol.
· Champions aseptic technique in the surgical environment to maintain patient safety. Maintenance of sterile field, PPE use, traffic patterns, respect of restricted areas, etc.
· Manages specimen collection according to department policy. Confirms with surgeons specimen labeling, diagnosis and special handling requirements. Logs specimen according to policy.
· Acts in a supportive role to other staff members to facilitate patient care. Utilizes time effectively to support the overall performance of the department.
· Takes responsibility to stay current in depart. communications, equipment repair journals, unit blog & staff meeting minutes.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education
Required: 
ASN
Preferred:  BSN

Minimum Experience
Required:  
Must circulate, strong ortho, general surgery, urology and ENT skills a must. Good communication,interpersonal, phone and customer service skills. Ability to function as a team member. Ability to handle stressful situations and to adapt to frequently changing situations. Basic computer skills.

Preferred: A minimum of two years OR experience and scrub experience. 

Required Licenses:  Current RN license with the authority to practice in the State of Wyoming, BLS and ACLS required at the time of hire. 

Functional Demands:

Working Conditions: 
Ability to take call per department protocols and needs. Surgical suite, frequent stressful situations, chemical fume exposure, irregular hours/meals/breaks. Occasional overcrowded conditions and irregular temperatures. Must be on-site at the SJH campus or other facilities to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.

Physical Requirements:  Must possess sight/hearing senses to perform the job requirements. Ability to lift, push, pull and move patients, equipment and supplies. Ability to lift 50 pounds. 90% of the time standing and/or walking, intermittent sitting.
