JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision of Director, Clinical Supervisor, or Charge Nurse, performs the receptionist and secretarial duties while functioning as focal communication source at the nursing station.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Receptionist Activities
- Courteously receives, greets & directs patients, visitors and hospital personnel arriving on or calling the unit. Acts as focus of communication in nurses' station regarding all patient care activities, patient locations and is able to provide information and direction regarding same. Receives requests from patients and families and refers requests to nursing staff or appropriate hospital personnel.
- Handles communication during emergency situations, stat request and orders handled effectively. Maintains, develops and updates skills to implement ideal service.
Clerical/Secretarial Activities
- Records and delivers messages for patients and staff. Receives and helps distribute mail, flowers and other items for patients or delegates to appropriate personnel.
- Maintains adequate quantity of forms, supplies and equipment inventory on unit. Maintains bulletin boards as assigned and keeps communication sources clear.
- Maintains clean, safe and functional working environment in nursing station area.
Patient Record Activities
- Initiates, assembles and maintains records for all patients on unit. Accurately transcribes physicians' orders, and communications necessary to implement orders. Initiates computer current information contained on patient Kardex. Accurately files diagnostic and laboratory reports in appropriate patient record. Maintains chart in appropriate functional order per hospital policy. Monitors location of record at all times. Prepares and transfers patient record to medical records upon discharge of patient.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Work Experience
Required: Good communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to speak English clearly and be understood. Ability to read and write English clearly and comprehend medical terminology. Must possess excellent phone etiquette and phone customer service skills, legible handwriting. Ability to multi-task. Basic computer skills.
Preferred: Previous clerical and/or receptionist experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 90% of shift sitting. Intermittent standing and walking. Computer use. Heavy phone usage.
