JOB SUMMARY
Administers general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical and obstetrical procedures. Performs anesthesia-related procedures in accordance to the national standards of American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Input and assistance is available from anesthesiologist if needed. Evaluates patients preoperatively and, in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist, formulates and carries out an anesthesia care plan including monitoring and recording patient reaction to anesthesia and modifying the anesthetic plan accordingly. Safely transports patients to and from an anesthetizing location and ensures appropriate care during the postoperative period. Interacts with staff and patients in a way that shows respect and consideration for the individual. Provides age and developmentally appropriate anesthesia services for infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric inpatient and outpatient populations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Patient Care
1. Prepares operating room; sets up and checks anesthesia machine, supplies, medications and gases. Prepares additional equipment as needed.
2. Prepares prescribed solutions and administers local, intravenous, spinal or other anesthetic following specified methods and procedures.
3. Provides anesthetic care seeing the patient through the perioperative period according to the national standards of the ASA and AANA.
4. Accompanies the patient to the recovery room and remains until patient's immediate condition is acceptable. Gives a complete report to the PACU nurse prior to leaving patient.
5. Performs pre-and post- anesthesia patient visits; documents anesthesia notes on patient records.
6. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned such as scheduling, material and supply management, development of policies and procedures, preventative maintenance and data management.
7. Documents reassessments and all pertinent events taking place during the induction of, maintenance of and emergence from anesthesia, including the dosage and duration of all anesthetic agents, other drugs, IV fluids, blood or blood products.
8. Ensures that the patient's pain is managed.

Patient Safety & Quality of Care
1. Assures that utilization and quality of care studies are performed in accordance with SJH policy and accreditation standards and that individual performance is at a consistent high level.
2. Active participation in department meetings and continuing education programs within the department and/or hospital.
3. Recognize and take appropriate corrective action (including the requesting of consultation when necessary) for abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medications or other form of therapy.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education: The successful completion of both an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program and national certification examination.

Required Licenses: ACLS required at time of hire. Credentialed, privileged, and in current good standing according to professional criteria specified by the SJH's Medical Staff Services by-laws.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
Working Conditions: Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Irregular meals/breaks. Intermittent computer usage.

Physical Requirements: Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than 6 hours per day. Must possess the ability to lift, push, pull and move patients, equipment, and supplies. Ability to push, pull, lift, bend, twist, and stoop intermittently.
